2nd Annual CCB Awards Dinner Message
Monday, May 23, 2016
Wallingford, CT - On Thursday, May 12, 2016, the CCB held its Second Annual Awards Dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell, Connecticut. Approximately 150 attendees enjoyed appetizers, dinner, dessert and coffee while listening to three very prestigious speakers: Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Commissioner Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, Gloucester, Massachusetts Police Chief Leonard Campanello and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Region 1 (New England) Administrator A. Kathryn Power. Both Commissioner Delphin-Rittmon and Administrator Power spoke of the need for professionals in the field to consistently keep up with changes in research and practice to be prepared to meet the needs and the challenges presented by the clients who seek services. The theme of competency and meeting measurable standards set by the experts in the field were emphasized by both. Chief Campanello spoke eloquently about the efforts of his department (and now others around the country) to work with those who have opioid use disorders to find appropriate treatment to battle the disease. He used reflection and humor to speak of the challenges of approaching the opioid problem from a collaborative perspective as opposed to the failed practice of trying to “arrest the way out of” the problem.
The highlights of the night were the honest and emotional acceptance speeches of this year’s award winners Michaela Fissel (Young Professional’s Award) and Nancy Hunter (David Powell Award for Lifetime of Service), who spoke of both the challenges, the battles and the successes which led them to where they are at today. These two amazing women pulled no punches in their assessment of the field of prevention, treatment and recovery, as well as where it needs to go in the future, all which was greeted with rousing applause by the attendees. All left there both touched and empowered by the speakers and award winners.
If you’re planning ahead, the 3rd Annual Dinner is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 11, 2017. If you have ideas for speakers, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
